Most of the Asian equity benchmarks are trading lower in the early deals on Monday on the back of a weak reading on Chinese manufacturing activity in November. Meanwhile, the Japanese stock market advanced and extended recent gains, with a weaker yen. Furthermore, a report showing a notable jump in Japanese capital spending also aided the upmove. On the economic front, capital spending in Japan climbed 5.5 percent in November, topping forecasts for an increase of 1.8 percent following the 3.0 percent gain in the second quarter. Among other markets in the Asia-Pacific region, Hong Kong and Malaysia are down sharply. Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore are notably lower, while Indonesia is down marginally. Shanghai is up with notable gains.
Hang Seng contracted by 427.89 points or 1.78% to 23,559.56, KOSPI Index dipped 13.97 points or 0.71% to 1,966.81, Straits Times slipped 15.01 points or 0.45% to 3,335.49, Jakarta Composite declined by 11.04 points or 0.21% to 5,138.85, FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI dropped 40.04 points or 2.20% to 1,780.85 and Taiwan Weighted was down by 67.25 points or 0.73% to 9,119.90.
On the flip side, Nikkei 225 increased by 101.26 points or 0.58% to 17,561.11 and Shanghai Composite was up by 19.55 points or 0.73% to 2,702.39.
