As the controversy begins to hover around the existence of global media giants in India ahead of court hearing, the largest search engine-- Google -- has clarified its stance stating that it is not possible to monitor everything posted on website. On the other hand, Twitter -- the social community site has asserted that it can selectively censor the content posted by users.

On March 13, 2012, 21 companies including Google, Facebook and Yahoo are summoned by a lower court in national capital whose representatives will justify their stance on the allegations of hosting obscene and objectionable content by Delhi based Vinay Rai. The Ministry of External Affairs has been asked by the lower court to get the summons served on these companies

'I'm hoping there will be a balanced debate around it and eventually the right thing would happen,' Google's Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora said. 'We cannot censor the Web. We cannot censor the ability of people to express themselves around the world. I think the idea of censoring everything and pre-clearing everything is going to fundamentally, sort of, taint the growth of the Indian economy in India and vis-a-vis the world,' he added. On the other hand, Rai in his complaint has mentioned that the contents on these sites were obscene and might lead to “creation of obscene books, pamphlets, papers which can easily be downloaded from these social networking websites affecting the minds of children and were harmful for social harmony and may lead to increase in crime against women also”.
