Board of Approval for SEZs scheduled to meet on July 22

The Board of Approval (BoA) for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) headed by Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar is scheduled to meet on July 22 to discuss matters like setting up new SEZs in the country. The commerce and industry ministry said, the 47th meeting of BoA for SEZs will be held on July 22. The Development Commissioner's have been asked to forward the proposals regarding SEZs along with their comments at the earliest so that they could be placed before the meeting, the ministry added.

The last meeting of BoA was held on May 31, in that meeting BoA gave additional time to 60 Special Economic Zone developers to complete their projects. These developers include Reliance Haryana SEZ, Cognizant Technology, Parsavnath Group and Mahindra and Mahindra. In that meeting, BoA also gave permission of denotification of an IT/ITeS SEZ of Satyam Computers Services at Visakhapatnam.

The 19 member BoA is the apex body and is headed by the Secretary, Department of Commerce. The BoA takes all the important decisions on issues related to SEZs. In 2011-10, exports from SEZs increased by 43% to Rs 3,15,868 crore over 2009-10.
