Concerned over the anti-outsourcing policy by the Obama government, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has urged discouraging such move by the most powerful nation which will hurt both the economies.  The US president Barack Obama had earlier announced that domestic companies who generate jobs within country will be getting bigger tax breaks as compared to those who outsource work to other nations and pass the employment opportunities there. Ahead of US president elections, such move is expected to bring some cheer to the beleaguered US job market. However, Mukherjee said, '...if US stops outsourcing jobs from India to some extent profitability of the economies will be affected.' Finance Minister is presently in US on a two-day visit aimed at increasing US investment in India.

According to Mukherjee, protectionism is at the discretion of every nation and the same can be amended as per requirement. He also stressed, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) too is working to free flow of goods and services across the globe. 'Protectionism ultimately does not help the country that resorts to it', he said, adding 'there is merit in giving up protectionism and I do hope the countries will not resort to it.'

The business process outsourcing industry in India has grown by over 30% in the last decade. The industry has been one of the major contributor to the economy’s GDP also has lions share in generating employment opportunities. Of the total 1 million workforce 40% are directly employed in the industry. Thus, any Protectionist policy by the US government will hurt the Indian economy.
