The Shiv Sena hit out at its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the latter's electoral rout in Delhi, and claimed that the residents of Delhi had used the broom to sweep the BJP out of contention. An article in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi by asking, 'if this isn't his defeat, then whose is it', and said the residents of Delhi had used the broom, symbol of the Aam Aadmi Party, to sweep out the BJP.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had taken a jibe at the BJP, saying the 'people of Delhi have shown that tsunami is mightier than a wave'. The Shiv Sena and BJP had snapped their 25-year-old alliance last year just before the Maharashtra Assembly polls, but later came together under the Devendra Fadnavis-led government in the state.

The BJP has since been handed its worst defeat in a state election after forming the government at the Centre by the Aam Aadmi Party, which made a clean sweep of the Delhi polls yesterday, winning 67 of the 70 assembly seats.
