The Spices Board India has taken up with the Department of Commerce, Government of India for imposing minimum import price and also ensuring that imported cardamom is as per the quality specifications stipulated in the FSSAI Act, 2006. This step has been taken as a measure to sustain the domestic cardamom industry and also control on the reported large scale import of inferior quality of cardamom both small and large.
The Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in response has issued a notification permitting import of cardamom small and large not below the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value of Rs 500 per kg as well as meeting the quality standards/specification of the FSSAI.
The cardamom can be imported only if the CIF value of cardamom (small / large) is Rs 500 or above per kg and on payment of import duty at 70% on CIF value besides meeting the quality standards specified under FSSAI. Based on the samples drawn and sent to the Spices Boards’ laboratories analytical reports will be issued for releasing the consignment of imported cardamom.
