The US markets closed mostly lower on Monday; while Nasdaq marked its 9-session winning streak, as investors worried over what Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen might say on the likely lift-off date for policy tightening later in the session. Yellen will appear on Tuesday and Wednesday for twice-yearly Capitol Hill hearings to provide the US central bank’s assessment of the US economy and when it will be ready for a raise in interest rates from near zero. On the economy front, existing home sales fell 4.9% in January a larger than forecast decline. Sales fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.82 million vs. 5.07 million in December. On the other hand, the US economy resumed above-trend growth in January, according to the Chicago Fed’s national activity index. The indicator, a weighted index of 85 different economic reports, rose to positive 0.13 in January from negative 0.07 in December. The three-month moving average meanwhile slowed to 0.33 in January from 0.34 in December.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 23.60 points or 0.13 percent to 18,116.84, the S&P 500 was down 0.64 points or 0.03 percent to 2,109.66 while, Nasdaq was up by 5.00 points or 0.10 percent to 4,960.97.
The Indian ADRs closed mostly in red on Monday; Infosys was down 0.73%, Tata Motors was down 0.59%, Dr. Reddy’s Lab was down by 0.41% and ICICI Bank was down 0.21%. On the other hand, HDFC Bank was up by 0.13%.
