Markets succumbs to selling pressure; Union Budget 15-16 fails to excite

Markets succumbing to selling pressure were now trading with losses, albeit slender after the presentation of Union Budget 15-16, which apparently turned out to be damp-squib for Dalal Street, dragging both Sensex and Nifty below psychologically crucial 29,250 and 8,900 levels respectively. Meanwhile, broader indices deep diving into negative territory were trading with losses of around 0.75%.

Sectorally, while FMCG and Banking counters were the prominent gainers of the session. On the flip side, stocks from Consumer Durables, Realty and Power counters were the notable losers of the session. In stock-specific activity, Gold Jewellery stocks like TBZ, Rajesh Exports, SRS and Shrenuj & Company surged after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed to introduce gold monetization scheme as well as Indian Gold Coin. NBFC stocks were trading mixed after Union Budget 2015-16 announced that NBFCS would be getting access to SARFAESI. The overall market breadth on BSE was in the favour of declines which thumped advances in the ratio of 1486:983; while 130 shares remained unchanged.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 29207.73, down by 12.39 points or 0.04% after trading in a range of 29120.79 and 29560.32. There were 9 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index.

The broader indices were trading in red; the BSE Mid cap index was down by 0.84%, while Small cap index down by 0.80%.

The gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were FMCG up by 2.01%, Bankex up by 0.34% while, Consumer Durables down by 1.51%, Realty down by 1.44%, Power down by 1.44%, INFRA down by 1.18%, Capital Goods down by 1.12% were the losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were ITC up by 3.20%, Axis Bank up by 2.37%, Hindustan Unilever up by 2.01%, GAIL India up by 0.47% and Dr. Reddys Lab up by 0.28%. On the flip side, NTPC down by 2.15%, HDFC down by 2.09%, BHEL down by 2.03%, Tata Power down by 1.66% and Hindalco down by 1.55% were the top losers.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 8872.05, up by 27.45 points or 0.31% after trading in a range of 8809.90 and 8941.10. There were 19 stocks advancing against 31 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were ITC up by 3.82%, Axis Bank up by 2.99%, Bank Of Baroda up by 2.87%, Hindustan Unilever up by 2.58% and Kotak Mahindra Bank up by 0.94%. On the flip side, Tata Power down by 2.00%, BPCL down by 1.63%, NTPC down by 1.55%, NMDC down by 1.54% and HCL Tech. down by 1.35% were the top losers.
