Crops and orchards have been damaged in Maharashtra state due to unseasonal rains in the last two-three days thereby causing a loss of about Rs 1,000 crore. This is yet another blow to the farmers of the state who are still reeling from the effects of a drought. The final figures are not yet available and this loss is just an estimate by the government officials.
The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation with officials and has asked them to conduct panchnama (spot inspection) of the damaged crops and submit reports.
In December, the minister had asked the Centre for Rs 6,000 crore for drought relief. Of this, Rs 4,800 crore was meant to compensate farmers for crop losses.
