SAIL embarks on modernization at five of its steel plants

In a bid to augment its crude steel production capacity to 21.4 MTPA, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has undertaken modernization and expansion at five of its steel plants. The five integrated steel plants are at Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur and Burnpur and a special steel plant at Salem. The indicative investment for the current phase of expansion is estimated at Rs 61,870 crore.

Separately, the company will invest about Rs 4,749 crore to augment its production capacity of the iron ore mines of Gua in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

SAIL is India's largest steel producing company. The company is among the five Maharatnas of the country's Central Public Sector Enterprises. The company has five integrated steel plants, three special plants, and one subsidiary in different parts of the country.
