The production of sugar in 2014-15 sugar season till March 31, 2015 stood at 247.20 lakh tons (LT), up 28.41 LT as compared to sugar produced during the corresponding period in 2013-14, as per data compiled by Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). As on March 31, 2015, out of 530 sugar mills which were under operation during 2014-15, 138 sugar mills have shut for the season and 392 are still working. In 2013-14, 316 sugar mills and in 2012-13 (when total sugar production was 263 LT) 231 mills were under operation on 31st March.
The sugar mills in state of Maharashtra have produced 93.64 LT of sugar till March 31, 2015, as against 70.69 LT produced during the corresponding period last season. As on March 31, 2015, 142 sugar mills were under operation, as compared to 79 sugar mills in 2013-14 as on 31st March last year.
The sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh have produced 63.60 LT of sugar up to March 31, 2015, which was 59.16 LT at the corresponding period last season. As against 91 sugar mills operating last year at this time, 77 sugar mills are crushing sugarcane now.
