Government has received a total upfront payment of over Rs 32,300 crore from telecom players in the recently concluded spectrum auction, well above the minimum outstanding due of Rs 28,835.34 crore. The bank guarantees from the different telecom players were received as per demand.
Bharti Airtel, the country's largest telecom operator, has paid Rs 11,374.7 crore, while the upfront amount due from it was Rs 7,832.20 crore. All other telecom operators paid the minimum amount due from them. Idea Cellular paid Rs 7,734.2 crore, Vodafone paid Rs 6,817.2 crore, Reliance Jio Infocomm Rs 2,591.8 crore, Tata Teleservices Rs 2,013.3 crore, Reliance Communications Rs 1,104.1 crore and Aircel paid Rs 742.5 crore as upfront payment.
The biggest telecom spectrum auction ended on March 25 after 19 days of fierce bidding that fetched bids worth about Rs 1.10 lakh crore to the government. For all the spectrum that was bid by telecom companies, Idea was to pay the highest Rs 30,306 crore; Bharti Airtel Rs 29,301 crore, Vodafone Rs 25,959 crore, Reliance Jio Rs 10,077 crore; Tata Tele Rs 7,851 crore; Reliance Communication Rs 4,299 crore; Aircel was to pay Rs 2,250 crore. The 800 Mhz spectrum worth Rs 9,710 crore at base price got sold at premium price of Rs 17,158.79 crore, while the 3G spectrum and 1800 Mhz spectrum contributed Rs 10,115.41 crore and Rs 9,636.17 crore respectively against their value of Rs 9,620 crore and Rs 8,292.4 crore. The proceeds from the auction of airwaves are expected to help the government keep the fiscal deficit within the target of 4.1 percent of the GDP, or about Rs 5.12 lakh crore, for 2014-15.
