With the ongoing trend of various scams hitting headlines, the decade old Rs 950 crore fodder scam is now an addition to it. The fodder scam has its roots from the undivided state of Bihar in 1990s and there are nearly 61 cases filed against 46 accused, which includes Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, the former Chief Ministers of Bihar state whose statements were recorded by a special CBI court in Ranchi; while statements of 330 witnesses are already recorded.

'It is a conspiracy of the CBI, under political pressure, to ruin my career. The CBI has intentionally dropped names of important witnesses including some government officers to mislead the court,' said Lalu. Former tainted Bihar Chief Minister was replying to questions of special CBI judge PK Singh in the fodder scam case (RC 20/96) related to fraudulent withdrawal of more than Rs 37 crore from Chaibasa treasury of West Singhbhum district.

Of 46 accused, ten have already recorded their statements, among them were Jagdish Sharma, a Lok Sabha member from Jahanabad in Bihar, former Indian Administrative Service officers Julius Beck, Mahendra Prasad and Phul Chandra Singh, and animal husbandry department officers KM Prasad and SN Sharma.

The fodder scam broke out in late 1990s in which various officials and politicians were accused of illegally withdrawing crores of rupees of public money on the pretext of purchasing cattle fodder. The scam ended Lalu’s chief ministership in 1997 after an arrest warrant being issued in his name.
