The production of tea in Nilgiris, the largest growing district in South India, has increased to 1.93 million kg in April compared with 1.41 million kg in April 2014, as per information provided by tea companies in the Nilgiris to Tea Board. This increase in output by around 37% in the Nilgiris can be attributed to the seasonal showers received in April which have resulted in higher tea production.
The five-year average production of tea in the region stands at 1.31 million kg in April and the production in the current month is around 47.33% more.
Further, in the first four months of current calendar year, the district’s cumulative tea production from corporate sector has risen to 4.83 million kg from 4.55 million kg in the same period a year ago. This is much higher compared to the five-year average production of 4.36 million kg for the period, up 10.78%.
