Congress to oppose Land Bill 'tooth and nail': Anand Sharma

13 May 2015 Evaluate

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma reiterated his party's opposition to the Land Acquisition Bill and alleged that the NDA Government is misleading the nation on the issue. Sharma said that they are strongly opposed to the Land Acquisition Bill and will continue to oppose it tooth and nail, which ever session. They opposed it in the last session, they opposed it in this session and will oppose it in the monsoon session also because the P M is misleading the country and his ministers are saying that the amendments to the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 are essential in country's interest and they reject it completely. He added that when it comes to nuclear defence establishments, the provisions are there in 2000 Act. Even when it comes to industrial corridors and also the national investment manufacturing zone as notified under the manufacturing policy, they are already covered, irrigation schemes are covered.

Sharma asserted that the Land Bill is not going to be any compromise with the government. He said that if you read the definition of public purpose and if there is urgency, where the government has to acquire, what they are saying for defence establishments-that provision is also there. We feel and we are convinced about that they are going to take away farmers land without any justification, which will also threaten food security besides hurting the farmers.

The Rajya Sabha has announced the names of ten of its members for the Joint Committee of Parliament for conducting wider consultations on the Land Acquisition Bill 2015. A resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted by the House today. The Lok Sabha had yesterday decided to refer the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Second Bill, 2015 to the 30-member Joint Committee of Parliament. It had also announced the names of 20 members of the House for the purpose. It has been mandated to submit its report by first day of the first week of the monsoon session.
