15 May 2015 Evaluate

The Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Minister, Piyush Goyal has said that efforts should be increased to meet the 175 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2019-20. Goyal added that government has already approved 19 solar power parks, which would generate 12-13 GW. Policy approvals have been done. One final policy (on solar power) of adding 1,00,000 MW will be confirmed (approved) by the Cabinet in few days.

Inaugurating the New Solar Passive Building of the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), he said that the government is working on an idea to get barren land on lease for setting solar energy projects.  For making micro projects viable, the minister said, 'We are coming out with a policy by which it will be compulsory to take solar power (from micro projects) in the grid whenever the grid reaches the remote area.

The Minister also announced establishment of International Solar Policy and Applications Agency, which would be a coalition of Solar resource rich countries for the development of Solar Energy and Solar technology applications. Earlier, the minister had said that investments worth $ 250 billion were planned over the next five years in coal, power and renewable energy and government is looking at opening 40-50 new coal mines in 18 months.

India’s renewable energy installed capacity jumped by 12.9% during the 12 months to 31 March 2015. India added 4,089 MW renewable energy capacity in financial year 2014-15, a capacity addition of 8.5% more than the targeted figure of 3,770 MW. The total renewable energy installed capacity in India at the end of FY 2014-15 stood at 35.77 GW, which the government plans to increase to 175 GW.
