05 Jun 2015 Evaluate

Greenpeace India campaigner Priya Pillai termed her meeting with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as 'positive', and said that the latter assured that he is with her organisation in their struggle. Pillai said that a delegation of 17 organisations met Rahul Gandhi. It was a very nice and a positive meeting. He has agreed and shared some of the concerns they have raised: that NGOs being targeted and larger democratic space of this country and dissent has been shrinking,

Pillai added that he is really concerned about the way all this is happening and he has assured us that he is with us in the fight and will definitely join the fight to save democracy. Pillai also stated the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has never entertained any of their requests to meet them and added that as Greenpeace, they have been writing to the MHA for a long time. But she was sorry to say that the MHA has never engaged with them and never want to meet them. They have never met them formally or informally. They believe the assault is continuing on Greenpeace.

The Congress Party welcomed Rahul Gandhi's moves of meeting all the delegations of NGOs, and said the Congress vice-president expressed his opinion of individual freedom. Congress leader P.C. Chacko said that Rahul ji has met Priya Pillai, he had a discussion with her. Rahul ji has expressed his opinion that individual freedom is paramount. Congress party stands for individual freedom. Freedom provided by the Constitution cannot be curtailed or encroached upon by anyone. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party mocked Rahul Gandhi's move, saying that the Rahul is just trying to create media hype.
