PSL to commission 2 pipe mills by February

31 Dec 2009 Evaluate

Pipe-maker PSL will commission an additional facility each in Chennai and Vizag in a couple of months. The new helically submerged arc welded (HSAW) pipe mills in Chennai and Vizag will have a capacity of 75,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) and 3,00,000 tpa, respectively. PSL currently has a 75,000 tpa mill each in both the locations.

HSAW is a kind of pipe used primarily in the terrestrial transportation of oil & gas and water. It is also used in the auto sector. Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren, Jindal SAW and Man Industries are some of the other players in the market. While all three manufacture other kinds of pipes too, PSL makes only HSAW pipes and is the largest player in that segment.

PSL has spent about Rs 250 crore on both the mills. The company raised about Rs 230 crore through external commercial borrowings (ECBs) and Rs 150 crore through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) earlier this year. A portion of the proceeds from both was used for funding the expansion.

The new units will take PSL's capacity in India to about 1.4 million tpa, with 75,000 tpa in Sharjah and 300,000 in Mississippi in the US. The company is also looking to both sell pipes and set up mills in North Africa but nothing was firmed up. The company has orders worth about Rs 2,000 crore in India.
