With the continuous protest for the Kudankulam Nuclear power plant, an expert panel was formed to reaffirm the safety of plant. This panel was headed by former Atomic Energy Commission chairman M R Srinivasan and has submitted its report to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The panel, in its report, has cited that the Nuclear power plant is quite safe. With the report in hand, Jayalalithaa is expected to break her silence on the issue.
In another development, Prime Minister has bashed NGOs protesting against plant saying they are being funded by US although the western nation has denied the same. Also, PM had cancelled licenses of three NGOs in southern Tamil Nadu for irregularities. Furthermore, Sonnteg Reiner Hermann a German national was detained and deported from country by Tamil Nadu Police for aiding the protests. It is believed that Hermann was allegedly linked with the NGO named People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.
Also, CMD of owning - Nuclear Power Corporation of India has expressed concerns over the escalating costs and time consumed due to protests. 'Everything was settled in April. There were fears. There was tsunami, there was an earthquake. We were totally successful in all the sides to give that assurance that we will not compromise with safety. In April, everything was ok and how come in September, Fukushima resurfaced? From 2002 onwards, no question, from April, no question', Jain said.
Kudankulam Nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, owned by Nuclear Power Corporation of India began construction in 1997. However, due to various hurdles the plant is still under construction. Although, the port to receive barges carrying over sized light water reactor equipment from ships anchored at a distance of 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) has been established.
