Onion prices rise to Rs 60 per kg at Azadpur market

25 Aug 2015 Evaluate

The price of onions in wholesale market has increased to Rs 60 per kg at Azadpur market in the national capital. This is despite increase in supply of onions in the wholesale market after arrival from neighbouring countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. The kitchen staple, which was being sold at Rs 35-50 per kg last week in the wholesale market, is selling today at Rs 40-60 per kg.

The onions are meanwhile sold at Rs 80 per kg in Srinagar, followed by Rs 70 per kg in Aizwal and Jabalpur and at Rs 67 per kg in the national capital, as per data compiled from Department of Consumer Affairs. The kitchen staple is being sold at Rs 80 per kg in the retail markets of Delhi.

Besides, the government has hiked the Minimum Export Price (MEP) of onions sharply by $275 per tonne to $700 per tonne. This step has been taken to curb shipments and boost domestic supply to control spiraling retail prices.
