4G Spectrum to be auctioned by year end: Telecom Minister

29 Feb 2012 Evaluate

Before the controversy originated from auction of 2G Spectrum cools off, government has decided to auction of 4G Spectrum this year. Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal has stated that auctions will be held by end of 2012,  also selling of radio waves for 2G services will be finalized. The sale of spectrum will though be government’s decision, but will be largely depended on the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI.

'By the end of the year, we are actually going to auction 4G (spectrum). That is what our intent is. We have enough spectrum now to share with everybody,' Sibal said. By adding further he said the government will have enough radio waves for all operators after it is released from the defence services as well as the cancellation of 122 2G new licences by the Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

After being red-faced due to the multi-crore scam during allocation of 2G Spectrum, government will be ensuring a complete transparent procedure for the upcoming auction of 4G. Sibal also said that he will approach the Cabinet in a month on issues like the pricing of spectrum and other decisions vital for the new policy framework. Concerned ministry will be announcing the contours of National Telecom Policy 2011 in April, which will present the roadmap for the telecom sector over the next 15 years.
