Govt declares 98 smart cities nominees, set for second stage of challenge

27 Aug 2015 Evaluate

Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaih Naidu has announced 98 shortlisted cities which will compete for the second stage of the smart cities challenge. Out of 98 cities, 24 are capital cities, another 24 are business and industrial centres, 18 are of cultural and tourism importance, 5 are port cities and 3 are cities which are known as education and healthcare hubs. However, 90 cities have already been selected for Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Further, the nominated cities will be allocated Rs 2 crore each from government for preparation of smart city proposals for competing in the second stage. Proposals will be judged on credibility of implementation, city vision and strategy, economic and environmental impacts, cost effectiveness, innovation and scalability and processes followed including citizen implementation. The government had recently announced that it would provide Rs 100 crore each per city per year for the project.Besides, cities that have failed to make it to the list of 98 urban centres nominated for the government’s ambitious Smart Cities project are Bengaluru ,Kolkata, Shimla, Gangtok, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, Puducherry and Itanagar.

The government has announced 98 names instead of 100 because Jammu and Kashmir requires time to shortlist their contenders. In Uttar Pradesh, for first phase of city challenge competition there’s a tie between Meerut and Raibareili. However, most names in the list of 98 nominations are from UP.
