IHS closes tower sale and lease back agreement with Bharti Airtel’s arm

IHS Holding, the largest mobile telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, has completed the sale and lease back of 949 towers in Zambia from Airtel Zambia, a subsidiary of Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel Airtel, under long term renewable contracts announced on 15 December 2014.

Outsourcing tower infrastructure to IHS allows Airtel to focus on its core business and customers; enables it to deleverage through debt reduction, and will significantly reduce its ongoing capital expenditure on passive infrastructure.

In addition, IHS will be rolling out its renewable energy solutions across the Airtel network.Already a leader in energy efficiency for mobile infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa, HIS will roll out its diesel reduction initiatives which offset the unreliability of electrical grids and reduce diesel consumption whilst maintaining unparalleled network uptime.
