The US markets ended lower on Friday, as a highly anticipated monthly jobs report intensified the debate about the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates in September. Widely seen as the last notable economic report before the Federal Reserve decides whether to raise interest rates at its two-day meeting on September 16-17, the jobs data showed that the US economy added a weaker-than-estimated 173,000 nonfarm jobs last month, while the unemployment rate dropped to 5.1% - marking its lowest level since April 2008, just as the Great Recession was setting roots. Wages however picked up last month, perhaps a sign that falling unemployment and scattered labor shortages are pressuring more companies to increase pay. The average hourly wage paid to American workers rose 8 cents, or 0.3%, in August to $25.09 an hour. From August 2014 to August 2015 hourly wages rose 2.2%, matching the best gain of the past four years.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 272.38 points or 1.66 percent to 16,102.38, the Nasdaq lost 49.58 points or 1.05 percent to 4,683.92 while, the S&P 500 dropped by 29.91 points or 1.53 percent to 1,921.22.
The Indian ADRs ended in red on Friday, Dr. Reddy’s Lab was down 2.22%, HDFC Bank was down by 1.07%, Tata Motors was down 0.91%, Infosys was down by 0.63% and Wipro was down 0.47%.
