Charges framed against Lalu and Mishra in fodder scam

Former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra and ruling JDU MP Jagdish Sharma are framed for the decade old Rs 950 crore fodder scam. Charges were also framed against former RJD MP R K Rana in connection with the case. The CBI court has framed charges against the accused although they have pleaded for not being guilty.

In 2011, the discharge petitions of the said accused were dismissed by the court and March 01, 2012 date was fixed for framing charges also they were ordered to be in court in person. All the accused appeared in the court and the designated CBI court judge V K Srivastava has framed charges. This move is foreseen a major setback for head of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (main opposition party in state), Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The aforementioned political biggies are booked for allegedly conspiring to fraudulently withdraw Rs.47 lakh from the Bhagalpur treasury between 1995 and 1996.

The fodder scam has its roots from the undivided state of Bihar in 1990s and there are nearly 61 cases filed against 46 accused which includes Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, the former Chief Ministers of Bihar state whose statements were recorded by a special CBI court in Ranchi; while statements of 330 witnesses are already recorded.

The fodder scam broke out in late 1990s in which various officials and politicians were accused of illegally withdrawing crores of rupees of public money on the pretext of purchasing cattle fodder. The scam ended Lalu’s chief ministership in 1997 after an arrest warrant being issued in his name.
