The exports of coffee stood at 1.43 lakh tonnes (LT) during April-August period of this fiscal compared to 1.26 LT in the year-ago period, according to data compiled by the Coffee Board. This jump of 14% in exports of coffee was despite lower global prices. In value terms, the exports rose about 12% to Rs 2,414 crore in April-August 2015, compared to Rs 2,148 crore in the year-ago period.
The exports witnessed a surge despite lower realization of Rs 168,366 per tonne during the period against Rs 170,352 per tonne last year. Export realization remained lower due to fall in global prices reacting to the currency depreciation in Brazil.
India exports both Arabica and Robusta varieties, besides instant coffee. The major export destinations for coffee are Italy, Germany, Turkey, Russia and Belgium, among others. The country’s total coffee output has reached a record 3.27 LT in the ongoing 2014-15 coffee year.
