Post Prime Minster’s stringent comments on the funding of NGOs in India, his political party Congress has also supported the same and have demanded investigations to be widened to other organizations as well. According to the Congress, these NGOs are road bumps in the country’s growth.

“Whether it is India’s hydel energy programme in the 1980s, thermal energy programme in the 90s, or India’s nuclear programme now, there has been a systematic attempt to derail the country’s quest for energy,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari. By adding further he said, “most of these agitations have very strong external linkages. Perhaps it would be appropriate for the government to see attempt to derail India’s quest for energy in a wider perspective.”

Recently, Manmohan Singh had bashed NGOs protesting against plant saying they are being funded by US although the western nation has denied the same. PM had cancelled licenses of three NGOs in southern Tamil Nadu for irregularities. Furthermore, Sonnteg Reiner Hermann a German national was detained and deported from country by Tamil Nadu Police for aiding the protests. It is believed that Hermann was allegedly linked with the NGO named People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.
