US markets closed lower weighed by Fed interest-rate worry

15 Sep 2015 Evaluate

The US markets closed lower on Monday, as investors remained hesitant to buy stocks ahead of the Federal Reserve’s much anticipated policy meeting this week. The Federal Open Market Committee begins a two-day meeting on Wednesday where policymakers will debate whether to raise US interest rates, which would mark the first increase in nearly a decade. Fed Chair Janet Yellen will hold a press conference on Thursday following that statement, and investors will look for clues to the timing of the Fed’s rate hike. The Bank for International Settlements stated that the wild market ructions of recent weeks and capital outflows from China are warning signs that the massive build-up in credit is coming back to haunt, compounded by worries that policymakers may be struggling to control events. The Swiss-based BIS added that total debt ratios are now significantly higher than they were at the peak of the last credit cycle in 2007, just before the onset of global financial crisis.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 62.13 points or 0.38 percent to 16,370.96, the Nasdaq was down by 16.58 points or 0.34 percent to 4,805.76 while, the S&P 500 dropped by 8.02 points or 0.41 percent to 1,953.03.

The Indian ADRs ended mostly in green on Monday, HDFC Bank was up 1.07%, ICICI Bank was up by 0.12% and Tata Motors was up 0.02%. On the other hand, Dr. Reddy’s Lab was down 0.47% and Infosys was down 0.01%.
