The total area sown under kharif crops as on 18 September, 2015 has reached to 1021.86 lakh hectares as compared to 1005.84 lakh hectare last year at this time, as per data from the Ministry of Agriculture. The area sown under cotton was estimated at 115.2 lakh hectares, down from 125.75 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
Among other crops, oilseeds were sown in 182.25 lakh hectares (as compared to 176.72 lakh hectares in the year-ago period), Pulses were planted in 112.42 lakh hectares( 100.72 lakh hectares) , Coarse cereals have been planted in 182.7 lakh hectares( 173.88 lakh hectares ). Rice, the main food grain grown during the kharif season, has been sown in around 372.66 lakh hectares( 371.9 lakh).
