JSW Steel’s plants in US are operating at 10-15% capacity utilization

JSW Steel has indicated that following the acquisition of the plate and pipe mills in US in November 2007, JSW facilitated turnaround in these units in US.  They have reported an EBIDTA of US$ 46 million in the five months ended March 2008 and US$ 75 million in the first six months of FY 2008-09.

But as the US economy is in deep recession, the capacity utilization for steel sector in US is below 50%.  The severity of the downturn in US has forced the user industries to delay the projects in oil and gas sector or to postpone the new projects.  As a result of such exceptional circumstances, the US operations of JSW steel, in line with the industry trends, are operating at low capacity utilization of 10-15%.  The company said that it expects the recovery will start in the next few quarters following the massive stimulation package announced by the US administration, and as a result of this the US operations are expected to pick up soon.

As regards Indian operations, JSW steel reported 60% growth in crude steel production in April 2009.  It had earlier given a guidance of 72% growth for the current fiscal.  The company indicated that considering the robust domestic demand, JSW steel is well positioned to benefit with significant volume growth and falling input prices.
