Welspun Gujarat set to avoid idle capacity on crude rebound

11 Jun 2009 Evaluate

Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren, the Gujarat-based pipe manufacturer, may avoid an idle capacity situation as a rebound in crude oil prices is likely to boost infrastructure building in oil and gas sector. Welspun's order book took a major hit in the last quarter due to slowdown in the oil and gas sector, raising fears that the company may stare right into idle capacity as soon as it exhausts its order book.

Though Welspun has a healthy order book, it has declined sequentially from Rs 9,000 crore at the end of the third quarter of FY08 to Rs 7,700 crore at end FY09. But rising crude and increasing capacity in the domestic market seems to be reviving hopes for the company.

Orders will keep the facilities occupied till December 2009. The order completion time for domestic orders is about three-four months and for international orders is about five-six months. Welspun still has a buffer of at least four months to receive new orders before we fear idle capacity in 4Q10.

As steel prices have bottomed out and oil is above $70/barrel, we expect new orders from second quarter of FY10. In the last quarter, Welspun received orders from clients such as El Paso, Trans Canada, with the composition being -- domestic 25%, North America 59%, African region 11% and Middle East 5%.
