20 May 2011 Evaluate

Govt has approved the proposal to conduct a survey based on caste, religion and economic conditions that will help in identifying people living below and above the poverty line with their social backgrounds. It was approved by union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

According to the officials, the survey is expected to begin June and end by December. The notion that some social and religious backgrounds had limited economic opportunities for most Indians is believed to be discarded with this evaluation, said officials.

The citizens will be answering just two questions to the census enumerators viz., What is your caste and what is your religion.

This is a first time a survey based on the social and economic background will be held in India. Though, the poverty census was earlier carried out in 2002 in rural areas, however, urban areas will undergo for the first time.
