Yeddyurappa heaves a sigh of relief in mining scam

The Supreme Court has today quashed the FIR against BJP's BS Yeddyurappa in illegal mining scam. The FIR was based on Lokayukta’s report which coerced him to step down as Karnataka’s Chief Minister. Yeddyurappa had challenged the FIR stating the proceedings were launched against him without giving opportunity to justify himself.

A division bench comprising justices Bhakstavatsala and Govindaraju quashed the FIR. This order is a major relief not only to Yeddyurappa but also to his scam-ridden party BJP.

Presently BJP, who won assembly elections in Goa yesterday, is trying hard to gain its goodwill by using anti-corruption weapon against ruling Congress party. Thus Yeddyurappa who is not fitting in the present frame of his party, might not be entertained by the party high command. Meanwhile, the tainted former minister is trying to show his political hold by organizing his community of Lingayats which had formed his political base. His followers are planning to organize a big event in Hubli on March 11 as part of his birthday celebrations.

In 2011, the BJP government had come in the storm over its alleged link with the mining mafia and then CM - Yeddyurappa’s confession of the existence of an illegal iron ore export racket in the state. This was followed by Yeddyurappa’s exit and proceedings against him in Supreme Court. Prerana Trust, operated by Yeddyurappa's family, had received a donation of Rs 10 crore from South West Mining Co, which also exposed Rs 20 crore for the purchase of over an acre of land near Bangalore by the family. Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, a former Supreme Court judge, alleged that these payments were in return for favors to the mining firm.
