In a positive development, the food ministry has upwardly revised its initial production estimates for sugar. It was reported that the output are likely to cross 25 million tonne - more than the initial estimates of 24.6 million tonne. The revised estimation is likely to brighten prospects of more shipments from the world's second-largest producer. The union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has already showed willingness to export one million tonne of sugar.

Earlier, Food minister K V Thomas had said that the country’s sugar output will likely rise by only 300,000 tonne in 2011-12 from a year before to 24.60 million tonne, based on the assessment by cane commissioners of producing states. The country's annual sugar consumption is estimated at 22 million tones that means there will be sufficient amount left for export. India has allowed sugar exports of 1.5 million tonne under the open general licences after a gap of two years.
