Former Chief Justice of India Konakuppakatil Gopinathan Balakrishnan’s assets which were accumulated by him during his tenure is being probed by government. Assets of two of his son-in-laws are also being investigated by the Income Tax department.  These assets, according to the petitioner civil society Common Cause, were amassed when Balakrishnan was judge at apex court and are far beyond their legal income.

“Despite the fact that there is overwhelming evidence indicating that the respondent no 3 (Balakrishnan) has been guilty of several acts of grave misbehaviour, the government has not taken any step for his removal from the NHRC,” said the petition, filed through lawyer Prashant Bhushan. However, the bench of Chief Justice SH Kapadia and Justice Swatanter Kumar, after evaluating the report, has asked government to inform the future course of action against Balakrishnan, who is presently holding chairmanship of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Justice Balakrishnan prior to his retirement on May 12, 2010, was judge at Supreme Court and on January 14, 2007 he was appointed the Chief Justice of India. His tenure lasting more than three years has been one of the longest in the Supreme Court of India.
