Union textile minister, Dayanidhi Maran, named a suspect in the 2G scam case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today and handed him over his resignation. Maran's resignation came minutes after a cabinet meeting ended.
Filing the status report in the 2G scam case, the CBI on July 6 said, that early evidence clue that Maran misused his office when he was Telecom Minister to force the sale of Aircel to an industrialist close to the Maran family.
Maran is being investigated for his role as telecom minister in 2004. He has been charged with the 'forced transfer' of ownership of a Chennai-based company - Aircel to a Malaysian firm - Maxis owned by his business associate to enable Maxis to be eligible for highly valued spectrum licenses.
