Most of the Asian equity benchmarks are trading up in the early deals on Thursday, heartened by gains on Wall Street and a recovery in crude oil prices in thin trading ahead of the Christmas holiday. Meanwhile, the Japanese market, which was closed on Wednesday for a public holiday, is advancing following the overnight gains on Wall Street. Among the other Asian markets, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are up with modest gains, while Shanghai is marginally lower. The markets in Malaysia and Indonesia are closed in observance of the birth of Prophet Mohammad and the markets in Hong Kong and Singapore will close early today.
Nikkei 225 surged 11.28 points or 0.06% to 18,897.98, Hang Seng increased 97.54 points or 0.44% to 22,138.13, KOSPI Index spurt 3.13 points or 0.16% to 2,002.35, Taiwan Weighted added 26.37 points or 0.32% to 8,342.07, and Straits Times was up by 13.96 points or 0.49% to 2,877.61.
On the flip side, Shanghai Composite was down by 51.07 points or 1.40% to 3,585.02.
