The production of tea in the country stood at 106.88 million kg in November, as top tea-producing state of Assam witnessed more plucking, as per data compiled by Tea Board. This is an increase of 3.86% as compared to a production of 102.91 million kg from a year earlier. India is the world’s second biggest tea producer and exports CTC (crush-tear-curl) grade mainly to Egypt, Pakistan and the UK, and the orthodox variety to Iraq, Iran and Russia.
The production of tea in North India rose by 9.21% and stood at 90.38 million kg compared to 82.76 million kg production in November last year. The production in West Bengal dropped 2.83% and stood at 31.29 million kg compared to 32.20 million kg last year in November, while output in Assam jumped by 17.28% to 56.73 million kg this November.
Tea production in South India declined by 18.11% and stood at 16.50 million kg compared to 20.15 million kg in November last year. The production in states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka stood at 12.31 million kg, 3.49 million kg and 0.70 million kg respectively.
