Congress backs Budget; PM felicitates growth rate upkeep by UPA

Standing by the Finance Minister and affirming the Union Budget 2012-13 the Congress party termed the General Budget as 'balanced, thoughtful and forward looking', however, its ally Trinamool Congress brushed it as 'status-quoist'. 'At the end of a difficult year, the finance minister has laid the foundation for fiscal consolidation, reorganisation and growth in this budget and the successive budgets. I am sure in the next three to four years we will be back to the high growth path,' said Home Minister P Chidambaram.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, backing the Budget presented by FM, felicitated the growth rate of economy protected by his government as compared to the other global economies. Singh said 'we were able to protect the growth rate of our economy much better than other economies. However, the challenge is to get the growth rate back to 8 per cent.'' PM, naming the subsidy reduction as biting bullet, said economy will have to bear this, however, he will discuss this tough decision with allies.

Budget 2012-13 stressed on reduction of widening fiscal deficit, it aims at generating Rs 40,000 crore from the auction of spectrum and Rs 30,000 crore from disinvestment. Thus the present fiscal deficit of 5.9% will be pulled down to 5.1%.
