Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched a broadside against the BJP, saying though the party managed to dislodge Congress governments in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand, it couldn't do so in Assam. Gandhi hit the campaign trail in poll-bound Assam, addressing an election rally in Biswamath Charali. ‘They (BJP) want Congress mukt Bharat, and in Assam they have cobbled up an alliance with parties with which it shares no ideological similarities. The alliance is just to grab power,’ she said, adding that BJP does not believe in the constitution of India and is ‘anti-people and anti-democracy’.

The Congress president said that this election is very crucial for Assam. ‘When Assam was reeling under floods, the NDA government did not help. Can the people of Assam trust this party? The special category status of Assam is also curtailed by the BJP government.’

Gandhi said that the NDA government is out to curtail autonomy of councils. She said that BJP did nothing for the tea garden workers, and women. Health and education sectors have deteriorated, and medicines have become dearer. Assam has shown the path of bullet to ballot, and Congress has given peace back to its people.
