Sugar production has been estimated to have increased by 14% till March 15 in the current marketing year that started October last year. As per the industry body, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) sugar production stood at 21.16 million tonnes compared to 18.57 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

The production have increased across the states, Maharashtra, the country’s largest sugar producing State, produced 7.3 million tonnes till March 15, which is 13 per cent higher than the last year. Sugar production of Uttar Pradesh is also up by about 13 per cent to 6 million tonnes. The southern states of Karnataka & Tamil Nadu have also reported higher production of 32 lakh tonnes & 10.80 lakh tonnes respectively. While Andhra Pradesh reported 13% more production than last year, the state has produced about 9.90 lakh tonnes of sugar so far.

ISMA maintained that the sugar production will be 260 lakh tonnes in the current season 2011-12. However, the Food Ministry has pegged sugar output at about 25.2 mt for 2011-12 marketing year (October-September).

ISMA stated that with an opening balance of 68 lakh tonnes of sugar as on October 01, 2011 and production estimates of 260 lakh tonnes, which seems very much possible, the Government should immediately allow further exports to reduce the surplus sugar which is estimated to be over 20 to 25 lakh tonnes.
