Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy was inducted as new Railway Minister today replacing Dinesh Trivedi, who after presenting his maiden Railway Budget was forced to resign after pressure from the Trinamool Congress over hike in passenger fares in the Rail Budget presented by him.

Mukul Roy was currently serving as Union Minister of State for Shipping and had earlier served as Minister of State in the Railway ministry before Trivedi took over last July. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the UPA chairperson and cabinet ministers including ministers of Trinamool Congress at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Trivedi was asked to quit after the Trinamool Congress, a key supporter in the UPA government, said it was disappointed with his decision to raise passenger fares for the first time in eight years. On the other hand, Trivedi was appreciated by the Prime Minister, Cabinet contemporaries and industry for his bold Budget, in which he announced an increase in train passenger fares.
