In connection with the Adarsh Housing Society scam, the investigating agency CBI today has arrested the retired Major General A R Kumar and detained another former Army officer. The arrest of four accused, former defence estates officer and secretary of Adarsh R C Thakur, retired brigadier M M Wanchoo and former Congress MLC Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, both chief promoters of the society and former deputy secretary of state Urban Development Department P V Deshmukh, was done few hours prior to this.

CBI had collected six arrest warrants from court on March 19, 2012. The issuance of warrants and followed by arrests are result of criticism by Bombay High Court for failure to act against the accused despite having evidence against them.

Adarsh Housing Society is a cooperative society located in the plush area of Colaba in Mumbai city and the flats were reserved for the war widows and veterans of the Kargil War. However, it was revealed that houses were not allotted to the beneficiaries and were instead taken over by politicians, bureaucrats and top ranking military personnel. The politicians named under this scam are the former Chief Ministers of Maharashtra state - Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan.
