First round of FTA negotiation between India and Australia to start by July end

The first round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between India and Australia is expected to start from end of July. India had agreed to negotiate for an FTA with Australia after the conclusion of feasibility study. The study had showed that both the nations would gain more than $ 30 billion over 20 years from reducing the trade barriers.

The Australian High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese said “Negotiators are currently doing consultations with the industry, stakeholders and then they will meet at the end of this month in India.” Australian High Commissioner giving stress on challenges involve in the FTA, says that though the two sides were not naive about the challenges involved in the proposal, there was a strong expectation that there was something fruitful in store for the two.

The two ways trade between India and Australia has been increasing rapidly, the bilateral tread between both the nations increased from $11.8 billion to $ 20 billion in last two years. Though, balance of trade remains in Australia’s favor, India’s export to Australia was only $ 2.5 billion for last year. India is Australia’s third largest merchandise export market whereas Australia is India’s eighth biggest trading partner.
