Govt, RBI working in tandem to reduce inflation to a comfortable level: Pranab

The increase in the headline inflation has raised government’s concern, which is taking every possible step to curb the sticky inflation. The June headline inflation as measured by wholesale price index (WPI) has soared to 9.44% from 9.06% in the previous month. Expressing concern over the elevated headline inflation, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said "Government is working together with RBI to take appropriate steps to reduce inflation to more comfortable level."

The finance minister said that “we are monitoring the price situation closely. The statement comes amidst wide belief that the RBI will continue with its anti-inflationary measures and hike interest rates by at least another 25 points, at its quarterly review on July 26.

As per finance minister, the surge in inflation for month of June is due to increased prices of fuel, seasonal effects, and upward movement in mineral and manufactured prices and in part reflecting imported inflation. Last month government had increased the prices of diesel, kerosene and domestic cooking gas due to increased international prices of crude oil.

However, on the food inflation, Pranab Mukherjee said Food Articles inflation has however stabilized at 8.38% in June 2011 from 8.37% in the previous month. It was coming down in last two weeks he added. Primary Articles inflation as a whole is upto 12.2% as compared to 11.3% in the last month, reflecting mainly the effect of increase in mineral prices. Manufactured inflation is slightly up to 7.43% in June 2011 as compared to 7.27% in May 2011.

Government had also revised the inflation figures for month of April, which surged to 9.74% from 8.66%, this upward revised inflation figures is highest in first half of 2011. And if the government revises the data for the month of June, then the current inflation can cross 10%.
