India's power output rose an annual 8.2 percent in June. The generation capacity recorded during June 2011 was 70.79 billion kilowatt hours (kwh) versus 65.41 billion kwh a year ago. It has also exceeded the target of 69.25 billion kwh set by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). However, power generation growth rate has slowed down when compared with the growth rate of 10.45 percent during May 2011.

The slowdown in power generation capacity is due to shortage of coal and delay in environmental clearances for mining of coal blocks. The power stations received 30.16 million tonnes (MT) of coal against their requirement of 37.0 MT, less by 18 percent. During the current fiscal the ministry has anticipated demand-supply gap of coal around 54 MT and has advised the consumers to import coal accordingly. Country’s power producers blamed the former environment minister Jairam Ramesh for “no-go” policy. Several projects were delayed due to delay in obtaining consent from environment ministry. Jayanti Natarajan’s who is succeeding Ramesh after cabinet re-shuffle is now expected to clear the delayed projects swiftly.

Power generation during the first quarter of current fiscal has grown by 8.33 percent at 217.23 billion kwh when compared to the same period last year 200.52 billion kwh. Gross monthly generation in all the categories viz; thermal, nuclear and hydro generating stations have indicated positive growth with respect to the same month last year. Nuclear and hydro based plants generation continued to achieve a remarkable growth rate of 40.09% and 22.42% respectively on year-on-year basis. Total thermal generation has grown by 4.99% over same period previous year; however, this is 2.03% less than the target set by CEA mainly due to low schedule from beneficiaries.

Dahanu TPS power plant with a capacity of 500 MW has achieved 103.6 plant load factor (PLF) and emerged as best performing power plant. However, gas-based generation declined 4.58 in June due to low availability of fuel.
