Growth in eight core industries plunges to 5-month low in May at 2.8%

After posting a record increase in the previous month, the eight core sector growth in the country slowed down to five-month low at 2.8% in May, due to contraction in oil and Natural gas, indicating further softening in already weak industrial activity. In April, these sectors grew at an over four-year high rate of 8.5 per cent. The May growth numbers are the lowest since December last, when the core sector had expanded by just 0.9%.

As per the data released by the ministry of commerce and industry, the combined Index of Eight Core Industries comprising nearly 38% weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 183.7 in May, 2016, which was 2.8 percent higher compared to the index of May, 2015. Its cumulative growth during April to May, 2016-17 was 5.5 percent.

Among eight core sectors, the coal sector having 4.38 percent weight in IIP index showed an uptick of 5.5 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 2.3 percent over corresponding period of previous year. Petroleum Refinery production having weight of 5.94 percent in the index, increased by 1.2 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 9.0 percent over the corresponding period of previous year. Fertilizer production having weight of 1.25 percent increased by 14.8 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 11.6 percent over the corresponding period of previous year.

Steel production (Alloy + Non-Alloy) having a weight of 6.68 percent increased by 3.2 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 4.6 percent over the corresponding period of previous year. Cement production having weight of 2.41 percent increased by 2.4 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 3.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year. Electricity generation having weight of 10.32 percent increased by 4.6 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 increased by 9.4 percent over the corresponding period of previous year.

On the other hand, there was contraction in oil and natural gas sectors. Crude Oil production having weight of 5.22 percent, decreased by 3.3 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 decreased by 2.8 percent over the corresponding period of previous year. The Natural Gas production having weight of 1.71 percent decreased by 6.9 percent in May, 2016 over May, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to May, 2016-17 declined by 6.9 percent over the corresponding period of previous year.
