2G scams’ verdict may prolong; SC reviews govt, telecos petitions today

The wait for verdict on infamous 2G scam seems to be longing for the scam ridden nation, as the Supreme Court is now deciding to admit and review petition of government which demands former to review its 2G judgements delivered earlier this year; the government has contended that policy decisions should not be open to judicial review. Besides this, SC will also review applications filed by the telecom companies and prime accused A Raja.

The government, in its review petition, stated that the court's order gets into policy-making, which is beyond the limits of judicial review. SC order discourages a level-playing field and adversely affects competition. The petition also demands clarification on whether all national resources should be auctioned, drawing from the top court's judgement on auction of 2G licences. A Raja who is believed to be the master mind in the 2G scam, in his petition, has complained lack of enough opportunity to apprise his involvement in the scam.

SC, on February 02, 2012, had quashed 122 licenses granted in 2008 by then telecom minister A Raja. The judges who delivered the verdict said all national resources must be distributed only through an auction.
