Bharti Airtel to launch 4G services in Kolkata

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa is likely to launch Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE-TDD) - a 4G technology network in Kolkata later this month. It is set to become the first operator in the country to introduce 4G technology based services.

The company has won broadband spectrum in four circles that are Punjab, Maharashtra, Kolkata and Karnataka. China's ZTE Corp is the network vendor partner for the Kolkata circle. Bharti had earlier awarded the Maharashtra circle deal to Nokia Siemens Networks. The operator is also planning to launch LTE in Pune in Maharashtra, Chandigarh in Punjab and Bangalore in Karnataka soon.

Bharti Airtel posted a fall of 23.37% in its net profit to Rs 1416.00 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 as compared to Rs 1847.80 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. However, total income increased by 9.86% to Rs 10523.00 crore for quarter under review as compared to Rs 9578.60 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2010.
