SC to hear Swamy’s petition against Chidambaram

04 Apr 2012 Evaluate

In a major setback to Home Minister P Chidambaram, the Supreme Court is set to hear two petitions citing his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scam. The petitions are filed by the Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy and lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan. SC will decide fate of Chidambaram’s political career as these petitions seek investigation against him. Thus, Home Minister will be one more addition to the list of tainted ministers currently ruling country.

The first petition filed by Swamy against Chidambaram in the trial court was overruled on February 04, 2012 and Home Minister was granted clean-chit in the case. However, the Janata Party chief challenged the trial court’s verdict and filed fresh petition in the SC. Swamy’s alleges that Chidambaram, then finance minister could have stopped granting of 2G licenses at throw away prices by former telecom minister A Raja and therefore, SC should cross-examine him. Besides this, another petition filed under Centre for Public Interest Litigation by Bhushan, alleges that Chidambaram as Finance Minister overruled his officers who favoured the auction of spectrum.

SC had quashed 122 licenses granted in 2008 Raja who is presently lodged in Tihar jail. The judges who delivered the verdict said all national resources must be distributed only through an auction.
